No theatrics please
Sir, - The Editorial `Accountability needed, not theatrics' (Aug.
1): Our politicians have mastered the art of fooling the nation
and shunning responsibility. Irrespective of their political
ideologies, all leaders seem to share this trait. The Prime
Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, who gave his failing health as one
of the reasons for offering to quit, was literally fit as a
fiddle the next day after the NDA's endorsement for him to
continue.
A couple of years ago when Mr. Sahib Singh Verma was replaced by
Ms. Sushma Swaraj as the Chief Minister of Delhi, he too had
staged a novel drama. With much fanfare, he and his family
members boarded a DTC bus with their belongings to return to
their hometown. It is not certain whether the bus was specially
chartered for Mr. Verma's adieu or he just used it to travel from
the CM's bungalow to the bus stop. But this drama did hit the
headlines.
P. Suresh,
New Delhi
Sir, - ``Please request me to stay back'' seems to the gameplan
of Mr. Vajpayee to keep the NDA flock together. He has not been
able to keep the conglomeration intact right from day one, as the
whole exercise was based on adhocism and opportunism. It is a
question of survival of individuals and parties. What if the
basic needs of the common man are uncared for?
Thousands of crores of rupees are swallowed overnight. Instead of
contemplating ways and means of retrieving the situation and
punishing the guilty, the think tank is busy devising ways of
saving the Government with theatrics. And why not? After all
democracy, which draws its strength from the people can also be
exploited to benefit personal motives.

Chennai
