MCH polls: BJP averse to alliance with TDP
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, AUG. 6. The BJP's city unit has made out a strong
case before its State leadership for contesting the MCH elections
without any electoral understanding with the ruling TDP.
However, the State leaders have made it clear that a decision
would be taken only after meeting their counterparts in the
Telugu Desam Party.
Articulating their viewpoint at the BJP State office-bearers
meeting held here on Sunday, the city leaders contended that only
the BJP was in a position to defeat the MIM, which held the
Municipal Corporation in the last elections.
Talking to reporters here on Monday, Messrs. N. Indrasena Reddy
and K. Lakshman, party MLAs, Baddam Bal Reddy, State vice-
president and Ranga Rao, convener of the Kisan Morcha, gave
evasive replies to questions whether the State leadership
favoured the move to have no truck with the TDP. All they said
was that the BJP was duty-bound to consult its friendly party
before announcing its decision,
Reviewing the outcome of Mandal and Zilla Parishad elections, the
office-bearers reiterated the party's line attributing the BJP's
debacle to the lack of coordination with the TDP. Mr. Indrasena
Reddy said both parties were responsible for the situation though
the TDP, being the bigger party, should take a larger share of
the blame.
He said the meeting was of the view that BJP leaders should take
up with the TDP at the earliest opportunity the question of
avoiding such misunderstandings in the future. Referring to the
suspension of the Karimnagar district unit president and four
ZPTC members, he said a three-member team comprising Messrs N.
Venugopal Reddy, Dr. K. Lakshman and Mr. Goverdhan, would hold
discussions with local leaders and recommend measures to revive
the party there.
