A visa to their dreams

DREAMS IN their eyes and a desire in their heart, the gathering had just one wish - to soar across the seven seas and come out in flying colours in their careers. It was the penultimate step to realise their dreams. For they have to overcome this acid test - visa interview.

The pre-departure briefing, organised by the Hyderabad branch of the British Library for students who gained admissions to British universities, was an occasion for students not only to know the nitty-gritty of British education and lifestyle but also to the procedures to be followed for the all important visa interview.

The tension was relieved when their fears of visa rejection were allayed by the Visa Officer, Simon, from the British High Commission, Chennai. He laid out a hope when he said only 16 per cent students got rejected last year despite the thorough scrutiny done by the British Embassy. And in a majority of the cases, students were at fault. However, he cautioned them against `producing' fake financial statements and false documents.

"Nobody can guarantee a visa, not even the issuing authority" was the important message sent across to the students who usually fall into the trap of agents who promise guaranteed visa to their land of dreams. It all depends on fulfilling the requirements like sound financial back-up, ability of students and a variety of other factors related to education.

About 80 students who attended the briefing have got their doubts cleared relating to the intricacies of `stamping' and on finances. Apart from the info on visas, the students had an insight into the British lifestyle and their requirements when they land there, through screening of a video, presentations by the British Airways and American Express Travellers and interactions with the alumni on studying and living in the United Kingdom.

A guide, that provided every minute detail of living and studying in the UK, particularly for the international students, was given to the students. It had everything -- right from starting the journey to arriving in the UK and reaching the destination. Some way to go!
