Fit institution certificate must for NGOs running homes for destitutes

HYDERABAD, AUG. 6. All the NGOs running shelters for the orphaned and destitute children must possess a `Fit Institution Certificate' issued by the Commissioner, Juvenile Welfare, otherwise, they are liable for prosecution.

Dr. G.F. Prabhakar, incharge chairperson of Juvenile Welfare Board, in a statement here on Monday said that it was mandatory for the NGOs' running shelters for the juveniles and other children to possess the certificate.

It is also mandatory that every NGO produced the juvenile or orphaned children within 24 hours before the Juvenile Welfare Board giving details in prescribed proforma and take permission to have interim custody of the juvenile for 90 days.

If the parents were not found they could continue keeping the children in the shelters, he said. If the rule was flouted then such NGOs' would be prosecuted under JJ Act 1986 and JJ Act for Child Protection and Care of 2000, he added.

Dr. Prabhakar said that there were a number of NGOs' running the shelters in the State without permission and asked them to update their positions. He would be inspecting the shelters soon with the officials of departments concerned, he warned.
