Umed Singh demands apology from Munni Devi
By Our Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI, AUG. 7. The husband of Phoolan Devi, Mr. Umed Singh,
today threatened to file a defamation suit for Rs. 50 lakhs
against Ms. Munni Devi, Phoolan's sister, unless she publicly
apologised within three days for ``false allegations'' levelled
against him.
Asserting that all charges against him were false, Mr. Singh -
who had earlier declared his intention to invest Phoolan's
property in a trust ``for upliftment of the downtrodden'' - said:
``Munni was not happy with the decision. Therefore, she levelled
charges against me and also alleged my involvement in Phoolan's
murder.''
He claimed it was part of a concerted plan to create a dispute in
the family and publicise it to project Phoolan's murder as the
outcome of a family feud and not a political conspiracy. ``They
want to brush aside the real issue so that the main conspirators
behind Phoolan's murder are saved.'' ``But I will not rest till
the killers are caught,'' Mr. Singh declared. He added that those
who were opposed to Phoolan's campaign for special reservation
for the very backward classes had conspired to kill her.
2 more arrested
PTI reports:
The Uttaranchal police today arrested two persons who had
allegedly forged documents to secure bail for Sher Singh Rana and
Ravinder ``fully unravelling'' Rana's gameplan to put an alibi in
the case .
``With the arrest of Surinder Singh and Pradip Singh the gameplan
of Rana to put an alibi in the case has been fully unravelled,''
the Director-General of police, Uttaranchal, Mr. Ashok Kant
Sharan, said. They were arrested this afternoon from Shyampur
area of Haridwar.
