BJP criticises Govt. approach to UST
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, AUG. 7. Mr. A. M. Krishnamoorthy, MLA, president of
the BJP in Pondicherry, today said the ruling Congress and its
allies were adopting a disjointed approach in representing to the
Centre the ill effects of the uniform sales tax to be imposed in
the Union Territory.
Addressing presspersons here, he said the Chief Minister should
have put together a delegation drawn from different walks of
life, to explain to the Centre to the implications.
A committee comprising the Finance Ministers of West Bengal and a
few other States had been urging for the undelayed implementation
of the new pattern of taxes in all States and Union Territories.
The CPI (M), instead of resorting to a campaign here, should urge
the West Bengal Government to persuade the Centre to drop the
move.
Mr. Krishnamoorthy said he, along with other party leaders, urged
the Prime Minister and the Finance and Home Ministers not to go
ahead with the new taxation, at the BJP national executive
committee meeting held in New Delhi last month.
He said a multi-departmental meeting would be convened next month
in the presence of the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs,
Mr. Vidyasagar Rao, at which measures would be discussed to tap
the tourist potential in Pondicherry in order to compensate the
revenue loss on account of the imposition of uniform sales tax.
