Indo-Australian Chamber sponsors IT delegation

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, AUG 7. The Indo-Australian Chamber of Commerce, Chennai, is sponsoring a delegation to participate in INTERACT+IT 2001, the largest congregation of information technology (IT) companies in Australia, being held at Melbourne, from September 4 to 7.

The delegation will also visit Perth, where the Australian Department of Trade an Industry will organise a series of interaction meetings with Western Australia's dynamic IT industry, says a chamber release.

According to the chamber, Australia's IT industry, ``emerging largely unscathed'' from the recessionary trends sweeping across the U. S. and several other countries, is on an ``aggressive search'' for partners from the Indian IT industry. The areas in which Australian IT companies operate include software development, geographical information system, multimedia, IT- enabled services such as call centres and back office operations and sourcing of skilled manpower.

Australia's IT industry achieved a rate of growth of 14 per cent in the current year, with an estimated turnover of (U.S.) $13 billion. ``The relative insulation of the Australian IT industry from global recession is largely due to the caution displayed by the IT companies. There have been no major dotcom busts in Australia, whose IT industry spread its wings evenly across the world and did not put all its eggs in the U.S. basket'', the chamber release says.

Western Australia is one of the fastest growing IT regions with over 400 companies offering a services, and many of them are keen to tie up with Indian companies, it adds. Those interested in participating in the delegation may contact the chamber (fax: 8225603).
