Indians triumph
SCARBOROUGH (UK), AUG. 7. Indian boys and girls have won the
British (under- 9) chess championship. In the boys section
Parimarjan Negi won all his games scoring seven out of seven
points while in girls category Sathyapriya won the championship
scoring five points.
Parimarjan won the championship with one round to spare. The
child prodigy from Delhi has proved to be the strongest player in
this age group tournament so far. He played 13 rounds in rapid
play and remained unbeaten. He won 11 and drew two.
In the crucial round he defeated former Indian under-8 champion
C. M. Gaurishankar in 31 moves. Playing with white pieces he
faced Sicilian dragon from Gaurishankar and launched solid
kingside attack and was rook and knight up by 28th move.
Sathyapriya emerged champion when she defeated E. Goldberg of UK
in her final round. Playing with white pieces, she went for a
queen pawn ending with two clear passers and checkmated their
opponent by queening both of them.
In the boys section the first and second runner-ups were also
from India. Gaurishankar with six out of seven points followed
Parimarjan in the table. P.P. Prachura was third with 5.5 Points.
