Attack on nun,priest condemned
By Our SpecialCorrespondent
NEW DELHI, AUG. 8. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India and
the All India Christian Council have condemned the attack on two
Catholic missionaries in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra on
Monday. The Archdiocese of Mumbai has decided to keep all
Catholic schools within its jurisdiction closed on August 13 as a
mark of protest.
While Sister Leena of Nirmala Hospital was shot at and injured in
Ujjain on Monday, the priest, Fr. Oscar Mendonca, was attacked
and injured in Thane the same day.
The CBCI secretary general, Archbishop Oswald Gracias, said: ``I
was beginning to think that attacks on Christians were becoming a
thing of the past, but these attacks on the same day in two
different States have sent distressing signals to the Christian
community in the country.''
The AICC urged the Prime Minister to rein in Sangh Parivar
vigilantes``who have taken the law into their own hands and have
attacked Christian religious persons''.
