Parliament pays homage to martyrs
NEW DELHI, AUG. 9. Parliament today paid homage to those who laid
down their lives during the freedom struggle on the occasion of
59th anniversary of the Quit India movement.
Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha remembered those who died
in Hiroshima and Nagasaki following dropping of atomic bombs on
August 6 and 9, 1945.
The Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr. G.M.C. Balayogi, said the
determination with which the nation stood behind Mahatma Gandhi,
resisting the might of imperialistic forces with the tools of
`Ahimsa' and `Satyagraha', ultimately compelled them to leave the
country.
On Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he said they remind people of the
importance of elimination of nuclear weapons to ensure perpetual
peace and harmony among nations. Both the Houses observed a
minute's silence in memory of the freedom fighters and the
victims of atomic holocaust.
In the Rajya Sabha, the Chairman, Mr. Krishan Kant, said the
whole nation had responded to the Quit India movement which led
to India gaining Independence five years later.
