Vajpayee, Sinha must quit: Congress
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, AUG. 9. The Congress today held a demonstration near the
United Trust of India office here, demanding the resignation of
the Prime Minister, Mr. A. B. Vajpayee, and the Finance Minister,
Mr. Yashwant Sinha, owning up responsibility for the UTI scam.
As the volunteers shouting slogans against the Vajpayee
Government, the TNCC president, Mr. E. V. K. S. Elangovan,
charged that the NDA regime was ruining the economy of the
country and emptying its coffers.
The Congress alone had the locus standi to launch a protest in
Tamil Nadu against the UTI scam, as most parties ``are at the
mercy'' of the Vajpayee Government, he said.
In a veiled dig at the AIADMK and the DMK, Mr. Elangovan said,
``the parties which claim that they were born to rule the State
will not launch an agitation against the UTI scam. For, they need
the blessings of the Vajpayee Government''. However, the Congress
had ``nothing to hide'' and hence, had no reluctance to fight the
government at the Centre.
Mr. K. Jayakumar, MLA, and Mr. C. R. Kesavan, grandson of Rajaji,
who recently joined the Congress, were among those who
participated in the demonstration which threw traffic out of gear
on the busy Rajaji Salai this morning.
Later in the evening, CPI volunteers led by the State deputy
secretary, Mr. C. Mahendran, held a demonstration opposite the
Park Town post office, protesting the UTI scam.
