Telco sales up in July

MUMBAI, AUG. 9. Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company reported sales of 5,832 commercial vehicles in July against 5,530 numbers in the same month in 2000; an increase of 5.5 per cent. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles sales registered an 18 per cent rise at 4,115 numbers against 3,483 numbers. LCV sales at 1,717 numbers showed a drop of 16 per cent over 2,047 numbers sold in the same period last year.

The company said this was the first time in over a year that sales for the reporting period showed an increase over the corresponding period last year.

Tata Indica sales stood at 4,205 units in the month under review, a growth of 19 per cent over July 2000 sales.

The improved performance was on the back of a 16.5 per cent growth in June this year and the company ended the first four months of the current financial year with a total sales of 16,973 numbers. Indica's market share in its segment stood at 18.2 per cent, an increase over 16.8 per cent. Utility vehicle sales in July were 1,744 numbers with cumulative sales of 7,497 numbers for the current financial year. Safari sales grew 21 per cent with the newly launched EX model finding wide acceptance in the market. The company's utility vehicle market share stood at 23 per cent at the end of July.

The passenger car business unit of the company registered a total sales of 5,952 numbers for the month with cumulative sales of 24,507 vehicles till the end of July. The overall industry has grown by a marginal 0.7 per cent in the first four months of the current financial year with significant growth only in June.
