Thipsay causes a big flutter

KOLKATA, AUG. 9. Veteran Indian Grandmaster Praveen Thipsay, Syrian International Master Imad Hakki and International Master from Bangladesh, Reefat Bin Sattar, scored major upsets in the opening round of the 3rd Asian Individual men's chess championship at the Gorky Sadan here on Thursday.

Thipsay found the going smooth on Board No. 4 to annihilate fourth-seed Pavel Kostur of Kazakhstan in 25 moves. The Bangla IM Sattar outplayed Grandmaster Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam in 34 moves. Hakki defeated Filipino GM Villamayor Buenavent. Top-seed Jun Xu, playing on the top board, had Surya Sekhar Ganguly of India putting up little resistance to win a positional battle in 55 moves in a Queens Gambit Accepted.
