By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, AUG. 10. The Chief Minister, Mr. S.M.Krishna, has directed the officials to implement the Supreme Court order on extending reservation in promotion by August 28.

Mr. Krishna, who reviewed the progress made in the matter at a Cabinet meeting here on Friday, directed the Chief Secretary, Ms. Teresa Bhattacharya, and PWD officials to initiate steps to implement the Supreme Court order. The Minister of State for Information and Publicity, Prof. B.K.Chandrasekhar, told presspersons after the Cabinet meeting, that the Supreme Court had directed the Chief Secretary, the PWD Principal Secretary and PWD Chief Engineer (South) to personally appear before it on August 28, and also directed the State Government to implement its order by that date.

Prof. Chandrasekhar said that the Government had filed an application in the court pleading for extension of time till November 30, 2001 to implement the order, stating that it had to address certain complex issues involved in extending reservation in promotion. But the court had turned down the appeal and asked the Government to implement the order by August 28.

The Cabinet decided to instruct the Chief Secretary and the other officials to appear before the court on August 28.

Drought

Prof. Chandrasekhar said that the Cabinet discussed the drought situation, and the Chief Minister apprised the Cabinet of the talks he had with the Prime Minister, Mr. A.B.Vajpayee, recently.

He said the Cabinet instructed the officials, deputy commissioners and the zilla panchayat CEOs, to provide employment to people under the food-for-work scheme.
