India takes on Uruguay in opener
CHENNAI, AUG. 10. India takes on Uruguay in Pool A and in the
opening match of the World Cup women's hockey qualifier to be
played at two venues, Amiens and Abbeville (France) from
September 17 to 30.
This will be the first event to be played in two pools of eight
teams after the FIH decided to revert to twin group system,
giving a go by for the four into four format. The Executive Board
at the recent meeting in Edinburgh endorsed the request of
Malaysian Hockey Federation to reconsider the decision to play
the 10th World Cup at Kuala Lumpur next year in a two pool system
than the four into four format.
The EC Board then decided also to convert the women's qualifier
into a two pool competition without reducing the number of teams
from 16 but extended the event by a day to accommodate the
programme of nine matches for each team. Hence, the final day's
schedule in Amien will be September 30 and not September 29.
India is grouped with England, France, Ireland, Kazakhsthan,
Kenya, Ukraine and Uruguay in A, while Belgium, Canada, Japan,
Lithuania, Malaysia, Russia, Scotland and United States will be
in Pool B.
