Scribes condemn BSF attack on magazine office
By Shujaat Bukhari
SRINAGAR, AUG. 12. Srinagar-based working journalists have
strongly reacted to the attack on the office of the mass-
circulated Urdu weekly Chattan here by the Border Security Force
(BSF) personnel on Saturday evening. Two of the staffers were
injured in the attack. One is still in BSF custody.
Condemning the BSF action, the journalists have termed it as yet
another assault on press freedom.
``It is nothing new in Kashmir but to make the weekly a target is
worth condemnation'' a senior journalist said adding that a probe
should be ordered into the incident.
Though the BSF authorities denied any deliberate intention in
attacking the office, the magazine's Chief Editor, Mr. Tahir
Mohiuddin, said it was unwarranted. A highly respected
journalist, Mr. Mohiuddin was himself dragged out of the office
and severely thrashed.
