Nepal Govt. urged to meet Maoists
KATHMANDU, AUG. 12. Political parties in Nepal today urged the
Government to hold unconditional talks with the Maoists for
peaceful resolution of the problem.
Representatives of major political parties at an all-party
meeting here said, ``the problems including the Maoists should be
resolved through national consensus'' and the ``talks should be
held without any pre-conditions.''
The press statement issued at the end of the meeting stated that
Constitutional rights should not be obstructed at any cost.
The Government had repeatedly said that ``talks could not be held
under Parliamentary democracy and Constitutional monarchy.''
However, the Maoists do not agree with this view.
The talks were held at the initiative of the Prime Minister, Mr.
Sher Bahadur Deuba, who has favoured a dialogue for resolving the
problem.
The Government had the backing of all political parties including
the ruling Nepali Congress party to hold talks with the Maoists,
which has claimed over 1,750 lives since 1996.
The all-party meet also urged the Maoists to stop ``forceful
activities''. Though the Maoists have not launched any major
attack, they have been forcing the local representatives to
resign from their posts.
