Two more traffic points to get signals with timers

By Govind D.Belgaumkar

BANGALORE, AUG. 12. Traffic Signals with timers are the in-thing in the City. Two more road junctions in the City -- the Mehkri Circle and the road intersection near Navrang cinema on Rajkumar Road in Rajajinagar -- have got traffic signals with timers.

And, it seems, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, which installs the traffic signals, is impressed by the new solar-powered traffic signals with timers.

Mr. R.Jaiprasad, Engineer-in-Chief of the Mahanagara Palike, told The Hindu that the Mahanagara Palike would install new devices when new signals had to be put up or the existing ones were taken up for upgradation.

Though this was no policy decision, the Mahanagara Palike favoured adaptation of the latest technology available. ``Why should we still opt for traditional traffic signals when we have better technology?'' he asked.

He pointed out that the new traffic signals attached with timers had received appreciation from the public. He noted that the motorists, who with the help of timers would know exactly how long they needed to wait at traffic junctions, could switch off their engines and save a lot of precious fuel.

The Traffic Police and the Mahanagara Palike had installed the first traffic signals with timers at the road intersection near Cauvery cinema on Sankey Road about two years ago.

Though vehicle-users are happy with the facility, it is being pointed out that the timers display only two digits. In cases where vehicle owners have to wait for 120 seconds, the timers showed 99 for the first 21 seconds, and then start the countdown. When the countdown comes to 3 seconds, the yellow light glows and then the green light flashes. The Mahanagara Palike and the Traffic Police could consider installing three-digit timers in future.

The Bharath Electronics (BEL) has manufactured and installed the new devices for the Mahanagara Palike.
