Technical teachers' plea
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, AUG. 12. A detailed memorandum was presented to the
Union Minister of State for Finance, Mr. Gingee N. Ramachandran,
during his visit to Pondicherry recently, by the Pondicherry
State Government Technical Teachers Federation seeking his
intervention to bring relief to the staff.
The teachers, who come under the category of music, drawing,
sewing and crafts, allege discrimination by authorities in fixing
the pay scales for them.
There are some 150 teachers in various Government schools
handling classes from 6th 10th standard in arts and crafts.
A spokesman of the federation told The Hindu today that while the
physical education teachers and librarians in Government schools
had been getting Rs. 5500-9000 pay scale, the technical teachers
were being paid Rs. 4500 as basic pay.
The authorities had not recruited any new staff since 1990, he
said and added the authorities had upgraded the secondary grade
teachers in Government schools handling beyond sixth standard as
school assistants on the basis of certain qualifications.
The Minister forwarded the representation he had received to the
Pondicherry Tourism and Education Minister, Mr. A.V. Subramanian,
requesting him to look into the representation.
