Deplorable attacks
Sir, - The attack on a Christian priest by Bajrang Dal activists
in Thane, Maharashtra, came as distressing news.
All over the country there are lakhs of people like me who
preferred inter-religious marriage for themselves and their
children expecting that this will lead to the blossoming of a
harmonious blend of faiths, making social interaction more
pleasurable and meaningful.
We hoped that the gap between individuals on account of their
religion will narrow in the long run and that this will certainly
lead to the emergence of better human beings.
But people like us are pained to observe that powerful evil
forces are at play which are bent upon disturbing peace based on
religious amity, setting up one section of people against another
under the pretext of ``religious superiority'' which is an
offspring of religious misinformation and intolerance.
Our dreams of a new world, new era and new order continue to
remain dreams. We tell ourselves we must pull on, hoping better
sense will dawn on the religious zealots and their activities
will be curbed by a responsible and reasonable government
receptive to the needs of the country.
