Hurriyat's appeal to international fora

SRINAGAR, AUG. 13. The Hurriyat Conference today appealed to various international fora, including the U.N., seeking their intervention to end alleged atrocities by security forces and gross human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir after the Agra summit, a charge denied by the State police.

The Hurriyat executive committee, presided over by Maulvi Mohammed Abbas Ansari, approved a memorandum in this regard and has sent it to the U.N. Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan, the Organisation of Islamic Conference, Amnesty International, Asia Watch and several ``friendly countries'', a spokesman said. The memorandum alleged that there had been an alarming increase in the atrocities after the deadlock at the Agra summit and that the judicial system in the State had collapsed giving rise to the fears of an insecure future for the people. However, a police spokesman denied the charge and said ``the allegations are not based on facts and appear to be an attempt to malign the security forces and police who are carrying out their duties.''

The Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (JKDFP) leader, Mr. Shabir Ahmad Shah, today appealed to India and Pakistan to work jointly to end the post-Agra summit ``cold-war'' and create a conducive atmosphere for the peace process to continue.
