11 killed in road mishaps

KOZHIKODE, AUG. 13. Eleven persons, including two women, were
killed and 32 seriously injured in two separate road mishaps, one
in Kasaragod district and the other in Kozhikode district, today.
While eight persons were killed in a collision between a KSRTC
bus and a private bus on the National Highway at Mangalpadi,
under the Kumbala police station limits this morning, three
persons were run over when a private bus, bound for Kalpetta from
Kozhikode, lost control while trying to avoid a vehicle in front
of the Kunnamangalam bus stand.
The first accident occurred when the KSRTC bus, bound for
Mangalore, rammed into the Mangalore-Kasaragod private bus near
the Mangalpadi Government High School. All the deceased and the
majority of those injured were passengers of the KSRTC bus.
The deceased have been identified as Keezhur Hassan (40) of
Bandiyode near Uppala, M.B. Aboobacker (45) of Kumbala, Jagadeesh
Kudlu (32) of Kudlu, Paithal Latheef (45) of Mogral, Pradeep
Shetty (30) of Mangalore, Kallyani (61) of Neeleswaram, Haneefa
(30) of Kadavath and Sr. Anne Mathew (27) of Lourde Convent in
Ernakulam. According to police, three of them died on the spot
while the remaining succumbed to their injuries either on way to
or at the hospital in nearby Mangalore.
The three persons who were run over at Kunnamangalam were
identified as Sadanandan, a resident near REC, District
Treasurer, Kerala Congress (M), Apputty of Kunnamangalam and
Abdul Lateef, a tenth standard student of the Marqus School.
The police said that 10 of the injured who suffered serious
injuries in the accident at Mangalpadi have been admitted to the
Unity Hospital in Mangalore. They have been identified as
Raghavan (45) of Neeleswaram, Padmini (50) of Kadanthakad,
Muhammad (45) of Kumbala, Shibu (30) of Kunnumkai, M.B. Suresh
(51) of Thaikadappuram, Sundara (55), his wife Suseela (55) of
Mullerya, Abdulla (25) of Kodalamugur, Latheef Choori (30) of
Adinagar and Indira of Mangalore. The condition of Indira was
stated to be critical.
