Police security for APHC team sought
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 13. The Confederation of Human Rights
Organisations (CHRO) has urged the State Government to provide
police security to the leaders of the All Party Hurriyat
Conference (APHC) who are scheduled to visit the State from
September 2.
Addressing a press conference here today, the secretary general
of the CHRO, Mr. Mukundan. C. Menon, alleged that the CPI (M),
BJP and RSS workers were unleashing adverse and politically-
motivated campaign against the visit. Since the main opposition
has come from the CPI (M) and BJP cadres, the State Government
should provide adequate police security to the leaders of the
delegation, he said.
Mr. Menon said the CHRO did not support or oppose the APHC or
any of its 23 constituent bodies. ``The visit by the APHC team is
a democratic process and the delegation has every right to
express its views in any part of the country, he said.
Though the APHC leaders had visited Chennai, they did not face
any threat. But here, the BJP and the CPI (M) were campaigning
against the visit, he said.
The team consisting of Mr. Mirwaiz Omar Farooq, head of the
Awami Action Committee, Mr. Abdul Gani Lone, leader of the
People's League, and Mr. Yasin Malik, chairperson of the Jammu
Kashmir Liberation Front, will take part in public meetings at
Kozhikode on September 2 and at Thiruvananthapuram on September
3.
The members of the reception committee constituted by the CHRO,
Mr. B.R.P. Bhaskar, Mr. Maithreyan, Dr. P. Muralidharan and Dr.
Abdul Salam, attended the press conference.
