India finishes last
MUMBAI, AUG. 13. The Indian team went down fighting to Hungary
1.5-2.5 in the seventh and final round of the Team World Cup
chess for the visually impaired in Dusseldorf, Germany, organised
by the German Chess Federation for the Blind.
Youngsters Swapnil Shah and Shirish Patil put up a good show, the
former forcing a draw against Hungarian number one Pal Eros,
while the latter defeated Gyorgy Nemes. However, Madan Bagayatkar
lost to Istvan Vojan and Vasant Patil went down to Joszef Denes.
The Indian team's participation, under the auspices of the All
India Chess Federation for the Blind (AICFB) was made possible
due to support provided by Bank of Baroda, All Cargo Movers,
Canara Bank, Bombay Municipal Corporation and Emirates Airlines.
Chandrasekhar Gokhale and Charudatta Jadhav accompanied the team
as coach and manager respectively.
Final placings: 1. Poland, 2. Russia, 3. Ukraine, 4. Romania, 5.
Spain, 6. Yugoslavia, 7. Germany, 8. Croatia, 9. Slovenia, 10.
Hungary, 11. Lithuania, 12. India.
