Colouring the imagination
GIVING COLOUR to their imagination, many children tried their
hand painting on various topics including pets, animal safari and
creatures under the sea.
The occasion was a painting competition organised by the Society
for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) for school children
in the city.
The children were divided into four categories - sub juniors from
I standard to III standard, IV to VI standards under juniors,
students from VII to IX standards classified under seniors and
the X to XII standard have been brought under super senior
category.
More than 1500 children including girls from various schools in
the city participated in the competition, say the organisers. The
majority of the girls preferred to paint a picture for the topic
`Creatures under sea'. The impact of various channels such as
National Geographic, Discovery and Animal Planet was very
visible. This was evident from the drawings of a few girl
students, who drew a picture, where woman divers exploring the
deep seas to explain the world about the various life forms found
deep inside the sea.
For the boy students, their main attraction was forest and
wildlife and so they chose the topic `Jungle and Animals'.
Giraffe, rhinoceros, elephants, lion and tiger with forest in the
background was the pictures painted by the boy students.
More than anything else it was the equipment which the children
brought to the venue and the way they used them to add beauty to
their work, which was very evident. Instead of just blotting the
paper with the colours, one of the girl students from DAV school
used a blower to put some blobs of paint on her paper, which
spread evenly and the result was more beautiful than she
expected.
The objective of the event is broadly to inculcate the habit of
compassion in the minds of children, a sense of welfare to the
animals and also against cruelty, said Mr. V. Ratnam, president,
SPCA, Chennai.
Besides selecting three persons from each category for the
prizes, the organisation will also exhibit the best of the
pictures selected by a panel of artistes at its office in Vepery
at a later date, they added.
