MT to head Kalamandalam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 14. Mr. M. T. Vasudevan Nair, writer, will be the new chairman of the Kerala Kalamandalam. Mr. Adoor Gopalakrishnan, film-maker, will head the Chalachitra Akademy.

The appointments of new heads of various Akademies and institutions under the Department of Culture were announced by the Minister for Culture, Mr. G. Karthikeyan, here on Tuesday.

Mr. N. P. Mohammed was named the chairman of the Kerala Sahithya Akademy, and Mr. Kavalam Narayana Panicker the chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademy. Mr. Kanayi Kunhiraman will head the Lalitha Kala Akademy as its chairman.

Mr. Karthikeyan announced that Dr. Vellayani Arjunan will be the new Director of Encyclopaedic Publications. Mr. Palai K. M. Mathew will be appointed as the Director of Balasahithya Institute and Mr. M. Thomas Mathew, the Director of the State Language Institute. The Muslim League leader, Mr. Korambayil Ahamed Haji, will chair the Moideenkutty Smarakam at Kondotty.

The Minister said the Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Anand Kumar, would be inaugurating an exhibition of murals at the Art Gallery of the Kerala Lalithakala Akademy on August 22. Reproductions of murals from Guruvayur and Aranmula would be among the main exhibits.

He said the Department of Culture would not be drawing up a new policy as culture does not change with changing Government. What is good from the current policies would be continued and changes would be effected where they are needed, he added.
