Cotton City: next halt for Indian Tour

COIMBATORE, AUG. 14. As the pro-am event preceding the Cotton City Open tees off on Wednesday at the Coimbatore Golf Club, this city will take a major leap as a sporting centre.

This will be the first time a major event on the Indian Tour - now sponsored by Hero Honda - will be held here and golf lovers in the city are tremendously excited about the prospect of witnessing some high quality golf over the five days.

The Cotton City Open (August 16 to 19) offers a total prize money of Rs. 8.5 lakhs with the winner taking home Rs. 1,37,700.

``We are thrilled to be part of the Hero Honda Tour. The Coimbatore Golf Club has made improvements all round and today we can boast of some of the truest, fastest and largest greens anywhere in the country,'' said Mr. K. Rajagopal, President, Coimbatore Golf Club. ``The pros will certainly enjoy playing here,'' he said. Almost all the players who have practised on the course so far have had some good words for the condition of the greens and the course.

``The golf course is in superb condition,'' said the two-time Indian Open champion Ali Sher. ``The greens are very quick and with the cross winds blowing at high speeds it will be a big challenge for us.''

Rohtas Singh, the veteran Delhi golfer, said as much too. ``I am looking forward to playing in this tournament. It is going to be exciting,'' he said.

All the leading players who took part in the first event of the Tour, The Hindu Open in Chennai last week, are here and the impressive list includes Vijay Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, Yusuf Ali, Shiv Prakash, Rahul Ganapathy, Basad Ali, Feroz Ali, Pappan and a host of others.
