Lab tests clear TNCSC godown stocks

By K.T. Sangameswaran

CHENNAI, AUG. 15. The results of an analysis of the rice samples taken by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption (DVAC) from the godowns of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation do not appear to favour the State Government.

Official sources say the laboratory analysis has revealed that the commodity if consumed will not be injurious to health.

Soon after taking over, the Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa, made a statement that rice stocks worth Rs.65 crores in TNCSC godowns were unfit for consumption.

She charged the previous DMK Government with not having adopted proper storage measures, and ordered an investigation by the special unit into the functioning of the TNCSC with regard to the public distribution system.

On receipt of a complaint regarding the quality of rice, the investigating agency conducted surprise checks in about 30 godowns and sent them to a laboratory at Guindy here for analysis.

The sources say samples were taken from both issuable and non- issuable rice and the tests revealed that the rice if consumed would not be injurious to health. If properly treated, the non- issuable rice could also be used for consumption.
