Pedestrian knocked down
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, AUG. 15. A 68-year-old man was fatally knocked down by a
motorcyclist on the busy Arcot Road in Valsaravakkam on Monday.
Police identified the victim as Kottyreddy of Ramakrishna Street,
Gandhi Nagar in Saligramam. According to the police, the victim
was walking along the road when the motocyclist hit him. He was
taken to the SRMC hospital where he succumbed to injuries.
The fatal accident has exposed the threat faced by pedestrians
because of poor road conditions. Road margins have shrunk along
Arcot Road especially in Valsaravakkam area because of
encroachments by hawkers and haphazard parking of vehicles.
Pedestrians are forced to walk in the middle of the road and face
the threat of being knocked down by fast moving vehicles.
Despite an increase in the number of accidents the authorities
have not taken any concrete steps to evict the hawkers and the
vehicles parked on the road, residents charged.
