Special Police hog limelight at I-Day parade
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, AUG. 15. A blend of colour, gaiety and precision
marked the ceremonial parade at the main Independence Day
celebrations at the Secunderabad Parade Grounds on Wednesday.
Nineteen contingents of armed police, mounted police, home
guards, all dressed in ceremonial outfits, and schoolchildren
smartly marched past the dais as the Chief Minister, Mr. N.
Chandrababu Naidu, took the salute.
Barring one contingent of the City Armed Reserve, it was a show
of the A. P. Special Police all the way. Predictably, the 1st
Battalion of APSP, Yousufguda, bagged the rolling shield for the
best armed contingent while the A. P. Social Welfare Residential
Education Institutes (APSWREI) Society, Hyderabad, won the shield
in the unarmed category.
For the first time, the parade included a contingent of Junior
Red Cross sporting white uniforms and red berets and a team of
the newly-formed Green Brigade comprising students. Brass and
pipe bands playing martial tunes formed the rear of the parade
which was commanded by Mr. Sanjay Kumar Jain, Addl SP. A large
number of students of the APSWREI Society later gave a colourful
presentation of Bharatiyam.

departments and its agencies. A panel of three judges awarded the
first prize to the float of the Transport department which
depicted the importance of pollution check-up of vehicles. The
Joint Commissioner, Transport, Mr. C. L. N. Gandhi, received the
prize from the Chief Minister. The tableaux of the Forest
