Independence day celebrated with patriotic fervour

HYDERABAD, AUG. 15. The 54th Independence Day was celebrated in
the twin cities on Wednesday with nationalist spirit and
patriotic fervour. A number of organisations conducted a variety
of programmes to mark the occasion.
The South Central Railway celebrated the day with its General
Manager, Mr. N. Krithivasan unfurling the national flag and
inspecting the guard of honour. Highlighting the SCR's
achievements, he said it has loaded 19.27 million tonnes of
freight from April to July end this year against 17.87 million
tonnes in the same period last year.
At AP Transco office, Mr. P. Ramakanth Reddy, Chairman and
Managing Director hoisted the national flag and asked the
employees to work with dedication. Mr. Dinesh Kumar and Mr. K.
Durga Prasad, Joint Managing Directors attended.
The State Bank Staff College celebrated the occasion in a unique
way, by inviting Mrs. Poornima Devi, daughter of Pingali
Venkaiah, designer of the flag, to unfurl the national tricolour.
Mr. Sudarshan Kumar, general manager and vice- principal of the
college, presented her the flag and a purse. Mrs. Poornima Devi
later unfurled the national tricolour at Vidyanagar cross roads.
A feature of the I-Day celebrations at Municipal Corporation of
Hyderabad was the felicitations to the best tax inspectors and
bill collectors by the Commissioner, Mr. P. K. Mohanty. At
Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board office,
the Managing Director, Mr. M. G. Gopal, unfurled the flag.
Hoisting the national flag at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel National
Police Academy, Mr. M. K. Shukla, Director, called upon the
police officers to discharge their duties with dedication and
honesty. At the AP Administrative Tribunal, the Acting Chairman,
Mr. A. Venkata Reddy, unfurled the flag.
The Home Minister, Mr. T. Devender Goud, hoisted the national
flag, at the Ashoka Pillar Martyrs Memorial, Kothi bus stand. It
was organised by the Telangana Swatantra Senani Samithi and the
Forum for Social Justice. Dr. B. Babu Rao Verma, president of the
Samithi and other freedom fighters attended.
The Independence Day was celebrated with much gaiety at one of
the Indian's Army's premier institutions - the Artillery Centre,
where the `Men behind the Gun' are trained. It is also the
institution's Raising Day.
The Executive Director of the BHEL, Mr. Virendra Kumar, hoisted
the tri-colour in its sprawling township at Ramachandrapuram. The
Deputy Inspector-General of the National Industrial Security
Academy, Mr. P.V.K. Reddy, hoisted the flag in the academy's
premises at Shamirpet.
At ECIL, Mr. M.H. Ron, Chairman and Managing Director, unfurled
the tricolour and inspected the ceremonial guard of honour.
At the Power Grid Corporation of India office here, Mr. Umesh
Chandra, General Manager and head of the region, highlighted the
role played by the organisation.
For the first time, the student volunteers of the National Green
Corps of Kendriya Vidyalaya participated in the Independence Day
parade at the Parade Grounds. The tableau of the AP Pollution
Control Board, the nodal agency for the National Green Corps,
depicted children as the main stake holders in guiding the adults
in corrective environmental action.
At the Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, the Vice-
Chancellor, Dr. I.V. Subba Rao, hoisted the national flag. At
Osmania University, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D.C. Reddy,
unfurled the national flag.
At the Thakur Hari Prasad Institute of Research and
Rehabilitation for the Mentally Handicapped, Mr. L. Govinda Rao,
Director, National Institute of Mentally Handicapped, hoisted the
flag. Mr. Thakur V. Hari Prasad, president of the Institute
spoke.
