Inzamam considering legal action against British papers

By Rizwan Ehsan Ali

ISLAMABAD, AUG. 15. Inzamam-ul Haq said on Wednesday that if Sir Paul Condon's Anti-Corruption Unit came up with evidence against him he was willing to leave the international season and appear for questioning.

It was reported in the British media last week that the ACU wanted to interview Pakistan vice-captain in connection with a triangular series match against Australia in England during which Inzamam was stumped by Adam Gilchrist.

``I have talked to my brothers in England and we are considering to take legal action against the British newspapers which implicated my name without any evidence to back up the claims,'' Inzamam said.

The burly middle-order batsman said that so far no one from the ACU or ICC had approached him to appear before them for questioning in connection with a triangular series in England.

``That is why I failed to understand why my name is being carried by some newspapers without establishing the facts.'' He said that he had nothing to hide from anyone. ``I have told the Pakistan Cricket Board that if ACU came up with any evidence, I am more than willing to leave the international season and appear for questioning as I know that I have done nothing wrong.''

Inzamam, who was fined by Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum for not cooperating with the inquiry against Pakistan cricketers' alleged involvement in match-fixing two years ago, said,

``I was fined not because I was involved in match-fixing but for not cooperating with the commission. But what could have I told the inquiry since I knew nothing.''

Inzamam said that Pakistan's former players should form an association to fight on the behalf of current players against baseless allegations. ``It is not nice a nice situation just before the start of the international season. The next time I go to out to bat I would have to give a serious thought before playing a delivery.''
