Jayalalithaa no to transfer of three IPS officers

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, AUG. 17. While turning down the Centre's request to relieve the three IPS officers, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa, today declared that Centre-State relationship was not a ``master- slave'' relationship.

``In a federal set-up, the State is not subservient to the Centre,'' she told reporters at the AIADMK headquarters. ``No States, no Centre.''

Referring to the Centre's letter seeking the concurrence of the State in transferring the three officers to New Delhi, she said this was very much like ``putting the cart before the horse.'' First, the Centre had issued orders transferring the three officers. Next, it wanted the concurrence of the State on the issue.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said there was a dearth of good officers in the State. Tamil Nadu, like other States, was unable to spare good, efficient officers for Central deployment.

Earlier, at the Secretariat, Ms. Jayalalithaa said an appropriate reply would be sent to the Centre soon on this issue. Asked about the Centre's communication on the transfer of the Madras High Court Chief Justice, Mr. N.K. Jain, she said the State Government would send a reply in due course.
