Karunakaran's dig at Govt.

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, AUG. 17. The senior Congress leader, Mr. K. Karunakaran, has criticised the sanctioning of medical and dental colleges by the UDF Government. Inaugurating the Malayalam Day celebrations of the `Kerala Desiya Vedi,' a Congress outfit formed by the ousted leader, Mr. Cheriyan Philip, here today, Mr. Karunakaran said the approach of the Government appeared to be giving bountiful to all those who seek. Are medical colleges something which can be granted to anyone who seek without any evaluation? he asked.

``Ironically, these were the same people who had opposed the decision of my earlier Government to sanction a nursing course at a hospital at Angamaly. They must ponder whether such steps they had taken in the past were correct,'' he said.

Mr. Karunakaran said those in power and positions should realise the fact that they have to face criticisms. One cannot shy away from criticisms but has to be tolerant towards criticisms. The criticisms should make them more active. But the present-day leaders are increasingly becoming intolerant, he said.

Making a dig at the `reformist group' leaders, Mr. Karunakaran said ``some of the leaders who were handpicked by me at the KSU camp at Cheruthuruthy are now behaving like those assaulting their own fathers. There are some leaders in the party who are not satisfied with whatever they get. They must remember that over-eating may lead not only to indigestion but even to mental retardation.''

Mr. Balachandran Chullikkad, poet, was among those who spoke on the occasion.
