For BMP website, Consul is still the Commissioner

By Govind D.Belgaumkar

BANGALORE, AUG. 17. Mr. Shantanu Consul is still the Commissioner of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP).

Can't believe it? But, he is according to the website of the BMP -- www.blrbmp.com.

The website launched in May, 2000, contains obsolete information and those who try to get a feel of what is happening in the BMP by browsing it, would only be wasting their time.

Though the site declares that it is updated every Tuesday at noon, many Tuesdays have passed by since an attempt was made to update it.

It seems the website was updated only for a couple of weeks after its launch. The website was expected to herald the new e-commerce culture in the BMP. A year later, the BMP seems to have remained where it was then so far as e-commerce is concerned.

It was expected that the website would keep the citizens updated with the latest information about the projects and priorities of the BMP. Even the section meant for tenders, does not list the latest tenders issued by the BMP.

While the Commissioner of BMP, Mr. Ashok Dalwai, could find himself surprised that his name does not figure in the website, the Mayor, Ms. Prema Cariappa, and the Deputy Mayor, Mr. B.S.Puttaraju, are lucky to have their names and designations mentioned correctly.

The website has nine sections: BMP (listing its short history, names of the Commissioner, Mayor and Deputy Mayor), protocol (listing road digging cell's activities), Budget 2001-2001 (features of the budget), committees (standing committees of BMP), Public Grievance Cell (with a format to register your complaints), The Garden City (important landmarks of the City), Your Representatives (names of the councillors), Self-Assessment Scheme and the Vision.

If an attempt is made to dig deep, one would find that he has not emerged wiser after browsing each of these sections. For example, the section titled ``Protocol'' speaks about the road digging permission given during September last year. The ``budget'' makes general comments about the activities of the departments and hardly any programmes taken up are explained. And speak of the progress made by the BMP on different works? Now, what is that?

The BMP had hoped to put all the forms needed for birth and death certificates, and those required to get the licences on the website. It was to have a ``BMP Charter'' explaining the duties and responsibilities of its wings. But they are not there.

Will the BMP take its website seriously and make it a little interesting. The least it can do is to give the correct name of the Commissioner of BMP.
