CPDC steps for accident-free zone

HYDERABAD, AUG. 17. The Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Limited, one of the four discoms serving Hyderabad- Secunderabad apart from six districts, promises to make its area free from any electrical accident.

At a high-level meeting here on Friday, wherein the MD of the company, Mr. T.V.S.N. Prasad, reviewed the situation regarding this aspect, officials took a pledge to ensure an accident-free performance by the operation staff while attending to breakdowns and fuse-of-calls. The meeting also resolved to educate the operation and maintenance staff, including contract labour on the job, on do's and don'ts while climbing the poles for restoration of supply by observing the second half of August as "safety fornight".

Regarding Metro Zone, which witnessed two or three accidents recently, the MD appointed a high-level safety committee, headed by the Chief Engineer, Metro Zone, and consisting of superintending engineers of different operation circles, to look into all aspects of safety and suggest further precautions apart from the existing ones. He said, training classes were being conducted by Mr. A. Raghavendra Rao, Director (Operations), for the operation and maintenance staff and contract workers who normally attend the fuse-of-calls.

According to an official press note issued later, the MD asked the fuse-of-call staff to wear helmet, gloves and safety belts and take "earth-rods" while attending on restoration works. The MD also disclosed that all the 49 static fuse-of-call centres in the Twin Cities were being replaced by 27 round-the- clock emergency service vehicles having necessary equipment and manpower.
