Committee to assess condition of roads

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, AUG. 17. A committee will be formed to inspect the condition of roads in the twin cities, assess the damage and submit a report, said the MCH Commissioner, Dr. P.K. Mohanty.

At a press briefing after the weekly high-level Coordination Committee visit here on Friday, he said the committee would comprise senior officials from the MCH, the Roads and Buildings Department and the National Highways Authority. Based on the report and the estimates submitted by the committee, repair works would be taken up, he said.

Referring to the modern lighting systems, he said, works estimated at Rs. 11.5 crores had been completed during the year 2000-2001. This apart, conversion of tubelights into solar voltaic lamps had been taken up at an estimated cost of Rs. 4.79 crores. The modern lighting systems would result in a power saving of up to 25 per cent, he added.

Tie-up with Seattle

He further said that the city would soon enter into a tie-up for mutual learning and sharing of technology for trade and development with Seattle city in the US.

Describing it as a ``great and prestigious tie-up,'' he said the modalities of the tie-up were yet to be discussed. He said the Trade Development Alliance for Greater Seattle had written a letter to this effect to the MCH.

Dr. Mohanty said talk of the tie-up had originated when he had visited Seattle a few months ago to attend a World Bank conference. He added that the corporation had also received a communication from Pittsburgh, another city in the US, for a tie- up.
