Workshop on gastro surgery begins

HYDERABAD, AUG. 17. An international gastro surgery workshop, aimed at showcasing the world class skills of top surgeons through live demonstrations, began here on Friday.

Some of the well-known international names in gastroenterology, including Dr. S. C. Sydney Chung of Hong Kong, Dr. W. Peter Geis, Dr. Joseph P. Petelin, both of USA, Dr. Munemasa Ryu and Dr. Akhiro Cho will demonstrate latest procedures like capsule endoscopy, endoscopic sewing machine, laproscopic pancreatic surgery and complex open surgery during the three-day workshop.

Many of these procedures are being performed regularly at the Hyderabad-based Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, a referral centre for digestive biliary-pancreatic and liver diseases, which organised the workshop.

Inaugurating the workshop, Dr. Chung said he was impressed by the rapid advances made in gastroenterology in Hyderabad and by the level of patient care. He was later honoured by the Institute with the Lifetime achievement award.

Dr. S. S. Reddy, medical director, Medinova, presided. Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy, chairman of the organising committee, welcomed the gathering, Dr. V. Venkat, managing director, Vivekananda Hospital, released the workshop manual, while Dr. G. V. Rao, course director, proposed a vote of thanks. Later, Dr. V. N. Shrikhande, noted surgeon from Mumbai, gave a talk on the revolutionary changes in surgical techniques from 1980 onwards.
