'Aggressive police'

Sir, - Reference to the Editorial ``Tamil Nadu's Aggressive Police'' (Aug. 14): it is not the police alone which failed to show restraint. Mr. Karunanidhi, who has been Chief Minister four times, must have fully known that he was putting the DMK cadres at risk when he called for the demonstration. But, it is now quite obvious that he had been more than willing to sacrifice his party members. And the Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa, also, perhaps, doesn't mind the police officers being lynched by a hostile mob. The Opposition, the ruling party, the Centre and the press have proved that they are only worried about their own authority and influence.

Police excesses or not, Mr. Karunanidhi and senior leaders of his party are fully responsible for the death of these ordinary citizens, who were so devoted to their leaders, that they willingly died for them on the roads in the most cruel way.

Sir, - You have rightly identified the ``distinctive hues of a Police Raj'' that is emerging in Tamil Nadu. It is relevant to note the ``special pat'' the police got in the Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa's Independence Day address for their ``aggressiveness''. So, it is clear the police are doing what is expected of them. By attacking journalists and preventing them from performing their duty, the police stand exposed. It is not difficult to understand why they prevented the media from capturing the happenings during the rally on August 12 and had their own version circulated. It does not matter to which political party the victims belonged; they were simple, ordinary people. When will the citizens of this State be free from this vendetta warfare?
