Usha Intl. ties up with Chinese firm

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLTAKA, AUG. 18. Usha International has entered into a tie-up with Chinese plastic fan manufacturing giant to grab a share of the Rs. 500 crore low end market so far exploited by the unorganised sector.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Mr. Sunil Wadhwa, Managing Director, said that the company would market China made plastic table fans in the country. To counter threats of Chinese ceiling fan imports, the company has recently launched a range of low end products priced below the expected retail price of Chinese products.

According to him, though ceiling fans constitute 80 per cent of the Indian market, domestic producers face little threat to Chinese imports in this segment as the retail costs after paying 40 per cent duty stands `higher' to Indian producers. The threat, if any, is in the plastic segment, where ``they are unbeatable''.

This apart, the company has also launched a range of premium decorative fans costing Rs. 9,000 and more in tie-up with Hunter of the U.S. These fans would be marketed under the brandname Usha-Hunter.

The company targets a turnover of Rs. 500 crores against Rs. 412 crores registered last year. Exports of fans, chemicals and auto components together are expected to shoot up to Rs. 100 crores as compared to Rs. 60 crores in 2000-01.
