CAB makes quarterfinals
CHENNAI, AUG. 18. Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) entered the
quarterfinals of the MRF-Buchi Babu all-India invitation cricket
tournament on the strength of its first innings lead of 204 runs
over ONGC. Centuries by Sandeep Sharma 129 (88b, 13x4, 6x6) and
Mithun Manhas 163 not out (122b, 10x4, 5x6) enabled ONGC declare
at 448 for five at the stroke of lunch on Saturday, but it was
still not enough for it to make any headway. CAB will now meet
Karnataka State CA.
Resuming at 165 for one, ONGC lost Sandeep at 261. Virender
Sehwag did not last long, getting out with the score on 266. Two
more wickets fell for the addition of 86 runs. But an unbroken
sixth-wicket stand between Manhas and Rizwan Shamshad (53 not
out), who put on 136 runs in 15.4 overs, enabled ONGC post 448.
The centurions Sandeep and Manhas had earlier put on 146 runs in
25.5 overs for the second wicket.
CAB, in its second innings, was 172 for three from 47 overs at

Kumble among the wickets
Resuming at a strong 248 for three, MAC- TNCA was bundled out for

for a paltry 48 runs. Most of the damage was done today by Anil
Kumble, who picked up four wickets. He clean bowled dangerman S.
Sharath, then trapped D.J. Gokulakrishnan in front. The Karnataka
leg-spinner caught Ramdas off his own bowling and finally removed
Dhandapani caught by Barrington Rowland at short-leg.
On Friday, Kumble bowled 10 overs picking up just one wicket for
47 runs. He finished with a match haul of five for 57. Medium
pacer David Johnson gave ample support to Kumble claiming three
wickets, two being crucial - Robin Singh and Hemanth Kumar.
Karnataka State CA declared its second innings at 151 for three.
By virtue of its first innings lead Karnataka State CA entered
the last eight.
