Bangladesh polls on Oct. 1
DHAKA, AUG. 19. Bangladesh will go to polls on October 1 to elect
a new government, the Election Commission sources said today. The
last date for submission of nomination would be August 29 while
scrutiny of the papers would take place on August 30 and 31.
The last date for withdrawal of candidature would be September 6,
they said.
The election schedule would be announced tonight by the CEC, Mr.
Syed, sources said.
The former Prime Minister, Ms. Sheikh Hasina's party, the Awami
League has been demanding that elections be held in September,
but its opponent, the BNP, wanted it in the first week of October
on the plea that a congenial atmosphere for elections needed to
be created first.
Ms. Hasina has alleged that the opposition BNP and its allies
were against elections and conspiring with some quarters in the
non-party caretaker government to ``steal the sure win of the
Awami league''.
