Second largest Buddhist temple built in U.S.
DENVER (COLORADO) AUG. 19. A Buddhist temple described by its
builders as the second largest and most elaborate outside Asia
was consecrated in Colorado in the United States.
The great Stupa of Dharmakaya rises 32.4 meters from its
foundation atop a mountain in Red Feather Lakes, and is ``an
expression of the aspiration for peace, harmony and equanimity
for all beings,'' the Rocky Mountain Shambhala Centre said in a
statement. The shape of the Stupa represents Buddha, crowned and
seated in the meditation posture on a throne.
``It took us 14 years to build this temple,'' the project
manager, Mr. Stephen Ross, told AFP. ``We believe it is the most
elaborate Buddhist temple outside Asia because of the artwork
inside,'' he said. Nine days of consecration ceremonies at the
Buddhist centre culminated with a procession of believers making
offerings at the Stupa on Friday.
The temple commemorates Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a Tibetan
meditation master who died in 1987.
The project has received the blessings of the Dalai Lama, the
exiled spiritual leader of Tibet.
