AGP looking for new allies
By Our Special Correspondent
GUWAHATI, AUG. 19. Once bitten twice shy. Yet to recover from the
effect of the severe reverses suffered by it in the State
Assembly elections in March as a result of its alliance with the
Asom Gana Parishad, the Assam BJP has decided to ditch the AGP
and go it alone in the panchayat elections to be held by the
year-end.
A senior BJP leader and former State unit president, Mr. Narayan
Barkataki, said on Saturday that the party would have no truck
with the AGP in the panchayat polls.
Virtually friendless in Assam politics, the AGP has begun a
search for new allies. It has constituted a five-man committee to
explore the possibility of allying with `like- minded' parties
for the panchayat polls.
