Swamy for forming panel to 'save democracy' in TN
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, AUG. 20. The Janata Party president, Dr. Subramanian
Swamy, today called for the formation of a national committee to
``save democracy'' in Tamil Nadu.
The committee could have political personalities, but it should
not be constituted on party lines, he told reporters.
Apart from leaders of political parties, it should have prominent
people from different walks of life as members. He would meet the
DMK president, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, and discuss this issue.
The committee should help combat lawlessness in the State.
Democracy was in peril, he added.
Tamil Nadu, he said, was a fit case for the invocation of Article
356 of the Constitution after the incidents surrounding the
arrest of Mr. Karunanidhi, the atrocities of the police and the
attack on the freedom of the press.
Dr. Swamy said the DMK should quit the NDA if the Vajpayee
Government did not take further action against the AIADMK
Government in the State. The transfer of three police officers to
New Delhi was no punishment and it betrayed the cowardice of the
Centre, he added.
