Manmohan Singh leaves for Geneva
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, AUG. 20. The former Finance Minister and Leader of the
Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Dr. Manmohan Singh, today left for
Geneva to attend the first meeting of an advisory panel
constituted by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-
General, Mr. Mike Moore, to find ways to make the organisation
more responsive to the needs of the member-Governments and their
citizens.
Apart from Dr. Manmohan Singh, the 12-member advisory panel
includes Dr. Ernesto Zedillo, former President of Mexico, Prof.
Jagdish Bhagwati, University Professor at Columbia University,
New York, Prof. Robert Baldwin, Hilldale Professor of Economics,
University of Wisconsin and Dr Peter Eigen, Chairman,
Transparency International, Berlin.
The mandate of the panel is to examine how the fullest possible
participation of each member-Government could be ensured as the
WTO expands to `near universal' membership. The panel has also
been asked to examine ways of creating a more effective
partnership between the WTO and the civil society.
