Notification on new number plates from Sept. 28

NEW DELHI, AUG. 20. The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Mr. B.C. Khanduri, today clarified that the notification regarding new type of registration number plates for vehicles would come into effect from September 28 this year for new vehicles and two year later for existing ones.

A highlight of the new regulation, which aimed at preventing fake number plates, is that a chromium-based hologram would be applied by hot stamping on the top left hand corner of the plates. The hologram shall contain Ashoka emblem with `Bharat Sarkar' and `Government of India' written vertically on either side of the emblem.

In addition, a permanent identification number of minimum seven digits would be laser branded into the plate and the plates would be fastened with non-removable and non-reusable snap lock system at the premises of the registering authority.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Khanduri said the preparatory measures for the introduction of the new system were in full swing across the country and would come into force as per schedule.

Five major institutions in different parts of the country have been identified, which would provide the necessary certification for agencies interested in providing the new number plates. The institutions are: Central Road Research Institute, Delhi, Automotive Research Association of India, Pune, Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehra Dun, Vehicle Research and Development Establishment, Ahmednagar, and Central machinery Testing and Training Institute, Budni, M.P.
