President's nod for T.N. bill

NEW DELHI, AUG. 20. In a bid to expedite disposal of election petitions in Tamil Nadu, the President, Mr. K.R. Narayanan, has given assent to the Tamil Nadu Municipal Laws (second amendment) Bill 2000 which also seeks to facilitate use of electronic voting machines.

The State Government proposes to amend the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act 1919, the Tamil Nadu District Municipalities Act 1920, the Madurai City Municipal Corporation Act 1971, the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Act 1981 and the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act 1998, to incorporate provisions, an official release said.

The proposed amendment has been made on the recommendations of the State Election Commission, the release said. This would help in facilitating use of electronic voting machines in the polls to the urban local bodies and dispose of expeditiously petitions by the district judge on the lines of the provisions.
