Journalists' plea to T.N. Govt.

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, AUG. 20. Various journalists' associations today urged the Government to withdraw its terms of reference to the Justice K.S. Bakthavatsalam Commission, which has been constituted to probe the violence during the DMK rally here on August 12.

In a joint statement issued here tonight, the Madras Union of Journalists, the Madras Reporters Guild and the Chennai Press Club said the reference would infringe on the rights of mediapersons to gather news in a free and fair manner and would hinder the freedom of the press.

The Government had asked the Commission ``to suggest norms and guidelines to be followed by mediapersons who cover processions and demonstrations in order to ensure their protection, including the safe distance to be maintained by them''.
