Speaker appeals for dignified behaviour

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, AUG. 20. The Assembly Speaker, Mr. K. Kalimuthu, today said he did not anticipate any violence in the House, but appealed to the Opposition DMK to behave in a ``dignified manner''.

``If the DMK members obey the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. K. Anbazhagan, uproarious scenes in the Assembly can be avoided,'' Mr. Kalimuthu, told the media, after the proceedings this afternoon.

Justifying his action against the DMK MLA, Mr. Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, for his ``uncivilised remarks'', Mr. Kalimuthu said he had ordered the suspension only after senior members including Mr. Abdul Latheef called for firm action to preserve the dignity of the august House.

Responding to Mr. Ilamvazhuthi's claim that he had only quoted Mr. Kalimuthu's remarks made at a public meeting some years ago, the Speaker said he had never made such ``obscene statements''. He challenged the DMK to prove that he had made such a remark. ``My speeches will be forceful, but never obscene'', he insisted.
